Our December

Our world has been a bit chaotic lately. We are in the middle of a really good God story, waiting in confident anticipation for an exciting ending. He always finishes better than he starts.

That might explain the no Christmas cards and tree this year:) However, here is a little snapshot of our December...

What's a choicemob?

Today, December 7th, is the first ever choicemob, and you’re invited. What’s a choicemob? It is a coalition of proactive consumers joining together to support companies that uphold our common values: Fairness, Compassion, and Respect for the Earth. Today we’re flexing our consumer, gift-buying muscle in support of Better World Books.

The choicemob community believes that business is changing our world, so we need to change business. By ‘mobbing’ socially proactive companies with sales and attention, we can make them the envy of their competitors and draw more companies into the practice of social values.

The more we shift our buying to companies that uphold our common values, and the more noise we make about it, the more the business world will embrace Fairness, Compassion, and Respect for the Earth.

Join the choicemob. Show the world that our values mean business.

Coffee shop shame.

Yesterday morning Kairah and I went to a local coffee shop to get a coffee for me and a bagel for her. She is the only kid I have ever seen in there...but it is surprisingly kid friendly with lots of cozy furniture to climb on.

This particular morning she didn't want to run around, she said "mama, I want you". This is her way of saying 'pick me up!' So we were standing in line, her on my hip and me pointing out all the wonderful bagels to choose from. The line was long. There were two people ahead of us and about five behind us all quietly waiting for their coffee.

In by far the loudest voice in line, Kairah starts counting....moles on my chest. "one, two, three, four, five...mommy has five nipples!" She announces proudly to everyone listening. Thanks a lot Count from Sesame Street!

Needless to say we took our coffee and bagel to go.

(By the way I just re-counted and there are not five moles...she was just showing off her counting skills.)

Mt. Whitney birthday

Last month I turned 31.

It wasn't quite as painful as 30 and I got to celebrate both years with 7 of the best people ever on the top of the tallest mountain in the USA.

Last year, my sister in law Heather put us in to the lottery to climb Mt. Whitney as a 30th birthday present. We got chosen to climb all 14,495 feet in one day in the middle of August. So we started the accent at 3am with little and no sleep, made it to the summit by noon and back down around sunset. I can't think of a better way to kick off my thirties...

Here are the highlights. It will be clear which are from my iphone and which were taken Heathers camera:)

Video coming soon...

In memory of Kobe.

Anyone who has spent any time with us over the last 10 years knows Kobe. He is one of those animals you just don't forget. He reminds you about all that is good and pure in the world. To some it might sound crazy, but he was so deeply loyal, gentle and loving that in many ways he taught and inspired us. If more people were like Kobe, our relationships would be unconditionally loving, free of conflict and our days would be filled with smiles and spooning:)

During our time in Uganda, our beloved Kobe passed away from a ruptured splenic tumor. He was healthy and happy right up until the tumor took him suddenly. Being so far away was deeply painful, but we were able to say our goodbyes by cell phone: Clay with the harmonica and me with a teary thank you for 10 amazing years of companionship. My Dad so graciously oversaw his care at the end and held the phone to his ear. He told us that Kobe most definitely heard us and perked up for one last tail wag.

This is a tribute to his remarkable, golden life:

20 reasons we will always remember Kobe:

- He went to college classes with Jess for two years, sitting in on lectures, labs and office hours

- He walked himself, carrying his own leash in his mouth.

- When he was a puppy he fell off a two-story balcony and landed safely in a tree branch suspended 10 feet off the ground.

-He had more friends than Clayton and Jessica combined.

- He was the inspiration and host for five amateur neighborhood dog shows in Shell Beach CA.

- He was remarkably gentle and could often be found snuggling with baby squirrels, cats, snakes, small dogs and babies

- He loved harmonica and sang the blues on command.

- Discovered he could jump off the dock into the lake and climb up the ladder to get out and do it again.

- He had no interest in retrieving on land but would bring back anything you threw into the water.

-Went snowshoeing with us in lake Tahoe and played in the snow until the hair in his paws froze and I had to carry him home.

- Camped and traveled to more places than most people,

-Accompanied us to work, restaurants, airports, bookstores and coffee shops…always the exception to the “No Dogs Allowed!” rule.

-Taught us to unconditionally love and accept all people.

-Surfed Pismo on a long board.

-Made himself at home in all three of out VW buses

-Befriended even the hardest of hearts; both dogs and humans.

-He became the self-appointed welcoming committee at the door of the coffee shop in the mornings and the local pub at night.

-He would gladly spoon anybody…anywhere.

-He walked down the aisle at our wedding.

-He would dive into the lake or the ocean and fully submerge himself to fetch rocks off the bottom.

-He was nicknamed the “Kobe Lama” and “Kobatoast”.

-He was often mistaken for a proud and gentle Lion.

-Went on adventures in sailboats, motorboats, rowboats, kayaks, and golf carts.

-Showed us what it looks like to be unwaveringly faithful

Goodbye to a dear friend.

The unforgettables

Tonight as I was getting Kai ready for bed, I had this sudden realization that although she is my daughter and still in a relatively demanding stage of her life...she is also my FRIEND. We laugh together a lot and we can talk about life as it happens throughout the day. Clay and I have a parenting philosophy that counts her as a whole person from day one (what a concept!) so whether its good or bad, we explain things and feelings as they happen and above all we are honest with her.

So I stopped our wrestling game on the bed and said "Kai I need to tell you something...YOU ARE MY FRIEND...thank you!" and she replies with a sing-songy "AAAAHHHHH" (like she just saw a cute puppy or watched a sappy movie) "your welcome Mommy"

I continued "So are we friends like you are with Zion and Anna and Maymay and Karis?"

She says "no"

I asked "Then what are we?"

She explains " We are Kairah-Mommy!"

There have been a few several unforgettable conversations lately and this is my attempt to capture them and lock them away in my memory.

A couple weeks ago we were celebrating my 31st birthday with my parents house. It was late and Kai had eaten birthday cake and was literally bouncing around the room at about 10pm. At one point I pinned her down to change her and put on jammies.

A few minutes later she looks at me and with Robin and Neil as witnesses says: "Mommy, thanks for keeping my gina clean." My response was the only obvious one: "Your welcome baby!"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lately when she wants to engage with us, she walks up and says:

"Guys, I have an idea..."

Us: "What's your idea Kai?"

Kai: "Lets play a game"

It goes one of two ways from here; either we CAN play a game and together we make something up, like playing restaurant, or jumping on the bed, or chase, or catch with a ball. Or, we CAN"T at that moment go along with her proposed idea and she responds with

"Oh Maaaaan!"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kairah is a built-in thermometer for when conversations between Clay and I (or anyone for that matter) get too heated. This normally happens while driving. In many cases we aren't even arguing, but rather having a good discussion about something we feel strongly about. Either way she feels the need to regulate and just when we are in the thick of discussion, from the back seat we hear a loud and stern:

"STOP guys STOP!"

Nov. 4th 2009

Kairah announced in the middle of the day:

"I want to play with my friend Daddy!"

There is no better testimony to the relationship that they have than that!
